लैंचो एक किसान था, उसका घर एक पहाड़ी के निचले हिस्से में था। वहां से... मतलब, उसके घर से नदी और खेतों को देखा जा सकता था। लेंचो के खेतों में काफी अच्छी फसल हुई थी और फूल आ चुके थे। उसके खेतों को जरूरत थी तो सिर्फ एक बार की बारिश की।
उस दिन लैंचो को फील हो रहा था कि आज बारिश होगी क्योंकि दूर-दूर से बारिश होने की आवाज और ठंडी ठंडी हवाएं आ रही थी। वह घर के बाहर आया। Of course बारिश का आनंद उठाने के लिए। बारिश की बूंदें गिरने की बजाय, सिक्के जैसे बर्फ के टुकड़े गिर रहे हैं। दस दस के सिक्के और पांच पांच के सिक्के जैसे लग रहे थे। अब मौसम खराब होता जा रहा था।
Lencho दुखी था और कह रहा था "काश यह जल्द ही बंद हो जाए"। लेकिन ओले.. मतलब, बर्फ के टुकड़े बरसाना बंद नहीं हुआ। अब उसकी सारी फसल बर्बाद हो गई। Lencho जो काफी ज्यादा दुखी होता है और अपने बेटों से कहता है, "इस साल हम सब भूखे मर जाएंगे। हमारी हेल्प करने के लिए यहां कोई भी नहीं है"।
पूरी रात Lencho टेंशन में था और सोचता रहा। अब उसे गॉड से मदद मांगनी चाहिए। हालांकि खेतों में काम करता था, लेकिन उसे पढ़ना लिखना आता था। अगले दिन गॉड को एक पत्र लिखता है। उसमें लिखता है, "भगवान अगर आपने मेरी मदद नहीं की, तो मैं और मेरा पूरा परिवार भूख से मर जाएगा।" और वह भगवान से एक सौ सेंट की मांग करता है।
और अगले ही सुबह वह तुरंत पोस्ट ऑफिस जाकर मेल बॉक्स में अपना लेटर डाल देता है। पोस्ट ऑफिस में जब एक Employee, Lencho के लेटर को देखता है तो बहुत हंसता है और बाकी सारे कर्मचारियों को भी दिखाता है। पोस्ट मास्टर भी पहले खूब हंसता है, लेकिन वह एक Humble इंसान होता है। इसीलिए भावुक हो जाता है और निर्णय करता है कि वे लोगों Lencho की मदद करेंगे। पोस्ट मास्टर सभी एंप्लोई से पैसों की मांग करते हैं और अपनी सैलरी से भी कुछ पैसों के लिए इकट्ठा करता है, लेकिन कुल मिलाकर 70 सेंट होते है।
पोस्ट मास्टर 70 सेंट को एक रिप्लाई लेटर (reply letter) में भर देता है। अगले Sunday, जब Lencho अपना रिप्लाई लेटर लेने आता है, तो देखता है कि उसके लेटर में सिर्फ 70 सेंट ही होते हैं। वह उसे पाकर खुश होने के बजाय दुखी हो जाता है। और गॉड को एक और लेटर लिखता है, उसमें लिखता है, "हे भगवान! वे पैसे जो मैंने मांगे थे, उनमें से सिर्फ 70 सेंट मेरे पास पहुंचे हैं। मुझे बाकी के 30 सेंट भी भेज दीजिए, लेकिन डाक के द्वारा मत भेजना क्योंकि पोस्ट ऑफिस में काम करने वाले एंप्लॉई धोखेबाज है।"
A Letter to God Summary in English
Lencho was a farmer who lived in the lower part of a hill. From his house, one could see the river and the fields. He had a good crop in his fields and the flowers had already bloomed. His fields only needed rain once.
That day, Lencho felt that it would rain because the sound of rain and the cold air was coming from far away. He went outside of his house to enjoy the rain. Instead of raindrops falling, pieces of ice like coins were falling. They looked like ten-cent coins and five-cent coins. Now, the weather was getting worse.
Lencho was sad and said, "I wish it would stop soon." But the hail (the pieces of ice) did not stop falling. Now all his crop was destroyed. Lencho was very sad and said to his sons, "We will all die of hunger this year. There is no one here to help us."
The whole night, Lencho was tense and kept worrying. Now, he had to ask God for help. Although he worked in the fields, he knew how to read and write. The next day he wrote a letter to God. He wrote, "God, if you don't help me, me and my whole family will die of hunger." And he asked God for a hundred cents.
The very next morning, he immediately goes to the post office and drops his letter in the mailbox. When an employee at the post office sees Lencho's letter, he laughs a lot and shows it to all the other employees. The postmaster also laughs heartily at first, but he is a humble person. Therefore, he becomes emotional and decides that they will help Lencho. The postmaster demands money from all the employees and also collects some money from his salary, but in total, it amounts to only 70 cents.
The postmaster fills 70 cents in a reply letter. Next Sunday, when Lencho comes to see his reply letter, he sees that there are only 70 cents in his letter. Instead of being happy, he becomes sad. He writes another letter to God in which he says, "Oh God! I asked for 100 cents, but I found only 70 cents. Please send me the remaining 30 cents as well, but don't send it through the post because the employees working in the post office are dishonest."
